Olympic National Park, Washington, 1996
A thrill coursed through me when I crested a hill to first view this scene. It was very near sunset. Bright sunlight illuminated the mountains and clouds while leaving the foreground flora in newfound shadow. The clouds were just clearing to reveal just the tops of the mountain ridges. Because the sun was falling fast, I had to quickly set up my 4x5 view camera, compose, focus, meter, and expose. I made four negatives in the span of just a few minutes, whose order is easily determined by the position of the sun on the tree tops in the lower right corner of the photograph - it was moving that fast! I like the way those partially illuminated trees impart a sense of movement to the photograph. This first negative turned out to be the best. This photograph appears in my book Resonance.
