Howse Peak, Mount Chephren, and Upper Waterfowl Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, 1993
The windless early October morning that I made this photograph the birds were silent, the lake surface like glass, the weather crisp and cool, and the air so clean that I could see for miles. It was a perfect Canadian morning. I setup my view camera tripod with its front leg in the lake because I wanted to get the submerged foreground rocks in the frame. After about 15 minutes setting up my camera and readying to expose the negative, I heard a persistent plinking sound behind me which made me stop. What could possibly be ruining this quiet morning?? For a few seconds, I couldn't figure out what caused it. Then I spotted a squirrel, about 30 feet up in a tall pine behind me, picking pine cones and throwing them to the ground for collection later. Smart little bugger. From then on my colloquial name for this photograph became the mad bomber squirrel photograph. It has become one of my favorite photographs, despite the squirrel.
