Gibson Girl Survival Radio, Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, Cape May, New Jersey, 2023
The US Navy issued this device to pilots for use if their aircraft was downed over water. It was a survival radio to call for help that relied on whimshurst-generated electricity, and an inflatable balloon that lifted the transmitting antenna into the air. The radio could be operated in a lifeboat. It was shaped so sailors could hold the device between their knees while cranking the whimshurst lever. The shape looked like the waists of shapely Gibson female models of the day, thus the name. The unique shape and details make for a very interesting photograph.
