Pipeline, Cape May, NJ 2021
"Art is the elimination of the unnecessary" — Pablo Picasso. This photograph is a prime example of Picasso's thoughtful insight. This pipeline was quite complex, partially in the ocean, and very difficult to photograph. Only when I eliminated everything from the frame except what you see, did I feel satisfied with this photograph.
It came about from total serendipity. During a visit to Cape May, I signed our daughter up for surfing lessons. The lessons took place in the early morning before the beach was open to swimmers, right next to Cape May's flood control pipes - part of a system that pumps storm water from the town back into the sea. The massive exit pipes had clearly been there for some time, acquiring quite a bit of "character" along the way. These were encrusted in rust and sea growth, making for marvelous texture, especially when wet. I exposed about 15 rolls of film at this spot over several visits and like this negative the most from among them!
